On Flexibility

How can you ensure that you are making the right career move for you?

Over more than three years of conversation around people’s lives and careers in healthcare communications, I have heard hundreds of stories about career moves; both extremely positive, and unfortunately negative.

We work in a remarkably fluid space compared with many other industries, and many of you will change roles within the next two years. How can you ensure that you are making the right move for you?

First and foremost, you must ask if the company has a clear vision, and one that you agree with. Is the position offering the kind of progression opportunities that will make this the right job in a few years’ time, as well as right now? And, particularly for the medical communications sector, are the projects and deliverables going to satisfy your scientific and intellectual needs?

Perhaps the most important thing to consider is: will the position fit in with the rest of your life? Most of us work to live, and don’t live to work. So our roles must fit in with what we do out of working hours. I believe that with the technology and communication channels we have available, most good companies should be offering a degree of mutual flexibility - be that with working hours, home working, business travel or other factors.

So, if you end up attending an interview this year, as well as preparing to show how you can perform in the role, make sure you spare a thought for how the role will perform for you!
